Leesburg Police Officer Retires After Providing More Than Three Decades of Public Service to the Community

Leesburg, VA – We would like to congratulate Sergeant Eric Wakeham on his retirement from the Leesburg Police Department after providing more than 20 years of service to the Town.

Sergeant Wakeham began serving his community in 1988 as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for the City of Virginia Beach. During his time in Virginia Beach, Sgt. Wakeham obtained his paramedic certification and transitioned to the role of firefighter paramedic. In 1992, Sergeant Wakeham was hired by the City of Norfolk as a firefighter paramedic where he served in this role until he began his career in law enforcement as a Police Officer with the Norfolk Police Department in 1997. From 1999 through 2003, Sergeant Wakeham held various law enforcement positions at local and federal agencies in the mid-west. Upon his return to Virginia, Sergeant Wakeham was hired by the Leesburg Police Department on January 27, 2003, where he has served the community since. In total, Sergeant Wakeham has been a public servant for more than three decades!

While a member of the Leesburg Police Department, Sergeant Wakeham has served in numerous specialized positions and roles in which he demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication to serving the Leesburg community. Some of these specialized positions have included Hostage Negotiations Team member, Crisis Intervention Team instructor, Crash Reconstruction Unit member, School Resource Officer, Field Training Officer, and patrol supervisor. Additionally, during his career, Sergeant Wakeham has received a variety of awards, including two Commander’s Awards.

In his free time, Sergeant Wakeham enjoys spending time at home with his family. In retirement, Sergeant Wakeham looks forward to spending more time with his wife, his dogs, his family, and most importantly his new granddaughter, while swinging on his porch swing and enjoying hot pots of coffee.
