| HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will demonstrate the exciting possibilities of wardrobe sustainability as he and others participate in a recycled material fashion show on the final day of the City’s Earth Day HTX. Recycling helps fashion move towards sustainability by saving energy and resources.
Everyone is invited to celebrate Earth Day HTX, the largest Earth Day event ever presented by the City of Houston. An outdoor interactive festival is planned at City Hall on April 19 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The Earth Day HTX Festival will feature a large earth model, along with citywide accomplishments like advances in recycling, water conservation, and solar technology. Everyone can also participate in hands-on activities such as a tour of a tiny house, a stroll through a simulated forest, and an electric vehicle ride and drive. The outdoor event will also have food, performances, musical guests, and giveaways.

On the final day of the speakers series, Mayor Turner joined EPA South Central Region Regional Administrator Dr. Earthea Nance and Dr. Loren Hopkins from the Houston Health Department to discuss how Houston is leading the way to build a more resilient city while advancing environmental justice and equity.
Dr. Robert Bullard, Texas Southern University Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy delivered a keynote lunch address on Environmental Justice in Houston. Dr. Bullard is often referred to as the «Father of Environmental Justice.»
As the former chair of Climate Mayors and during two terms in office, Mayor Turner has implemented notable milestones related to the city’s Climate Action Plan and Resilient Houston Plan:
- Energy upgrades to all public libraries.
- Mass electric vehicle charging capabilities and solar power output at airports.
- Water rollover service that automatically switches from one substation to another in the event of a power outage.
- 1.2 million trees planted as part of the targeted goal of 4.6 million trees before 2030.
- In 2021 Houston’s Building Decarbonization Policy was enacted and will preserve more than 700 acres of natural habitat
- In 2022, Houston earned the U.S. Green Building Council LEED for Cities Gold Certification.
- In 2023, the EPA ranked the City of Houston number one in the nation for green power usage among all local governments.
