Kawasaki’s Bryan Smith wins third consecutive Mile in 2016 at Springfield Mile I

May 29, 2016
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (May 29, 2016) – Bryan Smith proved his dominance at the Springfield Mile I on Sunday, taking home his third consecutive Mile victory of the 2016 AMA Pro Flat Track season. This Mile win didn’t come as easily, as the Michigan native had to fight to the finish with a pack of riders every lap, topping second place finisher No. 1 Jared Mees by a margin of 0.119 of a second at the conclusion of the race.

Smith, who pilots the third-generation No. 42 Crosley/Howerton Kawasaki Ninja 650, wrestled tirelessly with Harley-Davidson-mounted riders, Mees, eventual third place finisher No. 6 Brad Baker and No. 2 Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. and was officially scored with leading 16 of the 25-lap Main Event. The win was also Smith’s third consecutive Springfield Mile victory, having won both of last year’s contests at the historic venue.

“It feels pretty awesome,” Smith said. “To have three Miles back-to-back and win them all. I don’t care what kind of track it is, it’s awesome. But to win the Miles that I love, obviously to have three in a row at a historic venue like Springfield, is great. There’s not just one thing that was going through my mind through the last lap. There was a million thoughts of what to do, what not to do, go fast, not too fast, spin the tires, just a million thoughts. I was able to get just enough of a draft off of turn four in that last lap and just barely squeak by Jared.”

Three-time and reigning Grand National Champion Mees expressed his desire to win the coming races over the “Mile Specialist” but shared his appreciation for the bar-to-bar racing that went down during Sunday’s race.

“It’s definitely getting old finishing second on the Miles to the same guy,” Mees said. “But hats off to those guys. They’re working hard and that thing is fast. It’s hard to get it before the finish line but the team is working really hard and we’re trying to find more and more power and reliability. I felt like we had a little bit more than last year but you know, it is Mile racing at its best and a close finish is normal at the Springfield Mile.”

Baker officially led three laps during the Main by using the all-important draft to push past his competitors. The Washington native took home the final spot on the podium.

“It feels really good,” Baker said. “I’ve had the speed the last three races or so but it feels good to be here on the podium. It was a really fun race and the end of the race was an all-out battle.”

Baker’s Factory Harley-Davidson teammate No. 67 Davis Fisher had a lot to prove with the competition debut of the next generation Harley-Davidson XG750R, and the rising star did not disappoint. Fisher experienced a mechanical issue in his Heat race but earned his Main Event starting spot thanks to a photo finish in his Semi race for the final transfer position. After picking off riders throughout the Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines Main Event, Fisher earned the new machine its first Top 10 result with his eighth place finish.

“Davis is doing a great job of developing the new bike and moving forward with it but we know the XR is proven and capable of winning,” Baker continued. “Now we know the XG is capable of getting into the top 10 and now we have to see if it is capable of getting on the podium and winning. Until it gets to that point, I’m going to keep on the old, faithful XR750 that’s been around for 44 years and then eventually going to be jumping onto that thing when it’s ready. I want that bike to get better because if it gets better than the XR that means I’ll have a weapon to try to get on the top spot or the box on these Miles instead of always nipping at the heels of the Kawasaki.”

Smith now leads the Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines point standings by 16 points over No. 69 Sammy Halbert, 110-94.

In the GNC2 class, No. 94B Ryan Wells was unrelenting as he duked it out for his first Mile win of the 2016 season with second place finisher No. 99J Kevin Stollings and third place No. 23FJeffery Lowery.

“It’s my first Mile (win) and it’s awesome,” Wells said. “Especially at the Springfield Mile, the biggest Mile you could win, and for it to be a typical Springfield Mile ending, winning by half of a tire, it’s cool. I would have liked to win by more but it’s awesome. I wish I wouldn’t have seen a red flag with two laps to go but it all worked out and I’m happy. I knew I had a fast bike but I was drafting Stollings earlier in the race, and the kid’s real small and lightweight, so I knew if anybody could get by me before the line it would be him. I came out of turn four and I heard somebody; I peeked down underneath my handlebars and I saw the red bike and I knew it was him. I got as small as I could and was watching our front wheels go across the line and I was pretty pumped about it.”

Wells now leads the GNC2 point standings by 18 points over No. 14A Dalton Gauthier, 103-85.

Up next, 20 of the top AMA Pro Flat Track riders head to ESPN’s Summer X Games in Austin, Texas for the Harley-Davidson Flat-Track race on Thursday, June 2 at Circuit of The Americas. Be sure to purchase your tickets in advance at or tune in to ESPN on Thursday at 10:00 p.m. ET (7:00 p.m. PT).

AMA Pro Flat Track riders to be featured in Summer X Games 2015 in Austin, Texas

Apr 17, 2015

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 16, 2015) – This summer’s forecast just got a little bit warmer for 23 of AMA Pro Flat Track’s top Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines riders.

It was recently announced that, for the first time, flat track racing will be included at X Games Austin 2015, joining a diverse sports lineup featuring the world’s top action sports athletes competing for X Games medals and prize money in BMX, Moto X, Truck X, Skateboard and Rally. X Games Austin 2015 will take place from June 4-7 at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas.

The exiting X Games action will come on the heels of Rounds 3 and 4 of the AMA Pro Flat Track schedule, with the Springfield Mile set for May 24 and the Sacramento Mile slated for May 30.

The 23 athletes invited to compete in the X Games are all full-time riders in AMA Pro Flat Track, the top flat track racing series in the world, in the premier Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines class. The list is comprised of: Jared Mees, Brad Baker, Kenny Coolbeth, Sammy Halbert, Henry Wiles, Bryan Smith, Jake Johnson, Brandon Robinson, Jeffrey Carver, Doug Lawrence, Mikey Rush, Mikey Martin, Shayna Texter, Cory Texter, Briar Bauman, JD Beach, Stevie Bonsey, Michael Kirkness, Johnny Lewis, Wyatt Maguire, Nichole Mees, Robert Pearson and Jake Shoemaker.

“This is major for our sport,” said Jeffrey Carver, winner of seven AMA Pro Flat Track main events across both GNC1 and GNC2. “When I first heard the news that I was going to be invited to compete in the X Games, I was pumped and instantly thought how cool it would be to win a gold medal. A lot of my friends are really stoked about this and I think it’s going to show everyone around the world what we have to offer.”

Being able to showcase their talents, and the sport they love, to a new audience is very appealing for the invited riders.

“I think it can catch the eye of the younger crowd, said Stevie Bonsey. “We just have to get them there and catch their interest. As the riders, we need to make it look professional and make sure it’s as on point as it can be.”

Many athletes are excited to compete for something a little different, a coveted X Games medal.

“I’m really excited to race in the X Games,” said Sammy Halbert. “I usually do well at new tracks, so I’m feeling like I have a great chance of leaving Austin with a medal.”

As if a gold medal and over a million watching eyes from all points on the globe aren’t enough incentive for the 23 AMA Pro Flat Track riders to be great in Austin, a brand-new Harley-Davidson Street 750 motorcycle will be granted to the first-place finisher on behalf of Harley-Davidson.

ESPN and ABC will televise a combined 20 hours of live X Games Austin competition, which will also be accessible via WatchESPN. Additional coverage of sports and music will be carried on ESPN3 as well as the latest coverage across ESPN digital platforms, including, X Games app and X Games pages across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Bonsey Takes Thursday’s Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines Main Event Victory at DAYTONA Flat Track

Mar 13, 2015

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 12, 2015) – Stevie Bonsey was flawless from start to finish on Thursday night during the AMA Pro Flat Track season-opener at DAYTONA Flat Track.

Bonsey was mounted on the only Suzuki in the Honda-stacked Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines main event, which was sponsored by Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley-Davidson. He earned the coveted Round 1 victory by a mere .123 seconds on his No. 80 machine over a charging Jared Mees, who was sporting the No 1 plate for the first time this season.

The battle between Bonsey and Mees, riding a Montgomeryville Cycle Honda, was so close from start to finish, that the two touched tires on multiple occasions throughout the duration of the race. The win is Bonsey’s first at DAYTONA Flat Track and his third career victory. Taking the checkered flag gives the 25-year-old Salinas, Calif., product hope for a breakout season in 2015.

“I’m on top of the world right now,” said Bonsey. “It’s been a real struggle to get here but the hard work has finally paid off and I couldn’t be standing where I am right now without everyone that’s helped me along the way. It’s been a long deal to get ready for this season and it’s starting to pay off. I’m hungry now and these guys are tough. They are consistent at all … tracks and that’s what I’m trying to work on myself. I’m good on these short tracks but I need to work on my mile skills. Thank you to all the fans for coming out and supporting.”

Kenny Coolbeth rounded out the Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines podium, taking third on his No. 2 Zanotti Racing Honda. Brandon Robinson (No. 44 T.J. Burnett Farms Honda) and Robert Pearson (No. 27 R&R Racing Yamaha) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Earlier in the night, Coolbeth beat out Pearson to win the Dash for Cash.

A star was born on Thursday night in AMA Pro Flat Track’s GNC2 class, as 17-year-old Andrew Luker got the holeshot on lap one of the main event and went flag-to-flag from there, earning his first GNC2 victory in just his second race ever competing in the series.

“It feels amazing to be on top of this podium,” said Luker. “I tried to get a good start from the outside and I was able to do that. I just put my head down once I got the lead and just kept charging. I have to thank my sponsors and my mom and dad, they are always working on the bikes and getting them better. I want to also say a special thanks to my great grandmother who is watching right now.”

Starting in second, Luker, on his No. 11Z Clayton Williams Racing Honda, beat pole-sitter Bronson Bauman to the edge on the race’s first turn. Refusing to look back and give another inch for the remainder of the race, Luker crossed the finish line first 16 laps later.

John Vanderlaan eventually worked up to second place on his No. 12Y Southland Racing Honda, and Dan Bromley rounded out the podium in third aboard his No. 54A Bromley Brothers KTM

Friday’s Round 2 of the AMA Pro Flat Track season kicks off from DAYTONA Flat Track at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. PT). Fans can tune in and watch live at
