Official Emblem of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019 unveiled

Jul 10, 2019
FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) are delighted to unveil the Official Emblem of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019. The emblem launch further whets appetites ahead of the draw, which will take place at the Home of FIFA in Zurich tomorrow, 11 July at 15:00 CET and will be live‑streamed on FIFA’s YouTube channel.

The emblem takes its inspiration from the country’s rich history and diverse landscapes, with a variety of distinctive elements coming together to form the shape of the tournament trophy. The base evokes the lush green of Brazil’s natural scenery. Sweeping vegetation leads the viewer’s eye past the intense reds of the Brazilian soil and yellowy orange of the country’s world‑famous gemstones towards a celebratory figure. That figure, in turn, reaches towards a ball, the design of which is inspired by the iconic curved columns of Brasília cathedral, a masterpiece by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.Football is every bit as fundamental to Brazil’s identity as are its landscapes and history. In addition to A Seleção‘s success on the pitch, the country’s experience as a host of global football competitions dates back almost 70 years to the 1950 FIFA World Cup™. More recently, the nation staged the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, which saw almost 3.5 million fans pack out stadiums in 12 Host Cities around the country. While recent major events held in Brazil have featured stars at the height of their careers, the FIFA U-17 World Cup brings together the best young footballers in the world for a unique opportunity to showcase their skills on the international stage.A string of big names – such as Fernando Torres, Gianluigi Buffon, Toni Kroos and James Rodríguez – have lit up the competition on their way to global fame. Brazilian fans will be hoping to catch a glimpse of the next Ronaldinho or Neymar, who competed in the tournament in 1997 and 2009 respectively. Moreover, with 24 teams participating, the football-loving locals are sure to be treated to a wide array of talent. The FIFA U-17 World Cup will take place from 26 October to 17 November 2019.Please visit https://www.fifa.com/u17worldcup for more information.

FIFA launches child safeguarding programme and toolkit – FIFA Guardians™

Jul 10, 2019
FIFA Guardians™ is a new major initiative to help member associations and confederations around the world introduce stronger child safeguarding measures in football.Click HERE to read more about FIFA Guardians™Millions of children around the world are involved in football, almost all of whom follow a favourite team. Many children play in organised matches or kick-abouts and some also take an early interest in coaching and refereeing. However they may be involved in the game, what these children all have in common is the right to enjoy football in a safe environment and a culture of respect and understanding. With this firmly in mind, today FIFA launched a new dedicated programme and toolkit – FIFA Guardians™ – designed to enhance child safeguarding standards within football.Developed by FIFA together with its Child Safeguarding Expert Working Group, this new initiative aims at providing practical guidance to support the 211 FIFA member associations (MAs) in reviewing their existing safeguarding measures, to help prevent any risk of harm to children in football, and to appropriately respond if concerns arise.Containing practical guidance and support materials, the new online toolkit is based on “five principles and five steps” that are underpinned by recognised international standards and best practice in child safeguarding across sports. The FIFA Guardians toolkit is also based on the premise that keeping children safe from harm is “Up to all of Us”, no matter the country we are from or the role we hold in football. The FIFA Guardians programme will be rolled out in the coming months through a series of training modules and workshops to promote global awareness and its implementation in all FIFA MAs and by working together with the confederations. In launching the new programme today, FIFA Secretary General, Fatma Samoura, said:“FIFA’s vision is to promote the game of football, protect its integrity and bring the game to all. In realising this vision, we aim to ensure that involvement in football, in any form, is a positive experience for all children.“Furthermore, as the world governing body of football, FIFA has a duty and responsibility to ensure that those who play football can do so in a safe, positive and enjoyable environment.“Today’s launch is a landmark step for FIFA and the world of football in general, and I am confident that the FIFA Guardians programme will help to mobilise action and guide our 211 member associations around the world in reviewing and implementing their own safeguarding measures to keep children safe in football. FIFA believes this to be every child’s right.”Joyce Cook, FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer, added:“Whilst some member associations have well-developed policies and procedures in place, it is clear that many others are just starting out on their safeguarding journey.“FIFA’s new child safeguarding toolkit builds on the confidential reporting structures and safeguarding frameworks FIFA already has in place, and provides clear and practical guidance for our member associations and their stakeholders.“We will be rolling out the FIFA Guardians programme over the coming months, starting with a series of workshops and training modules to help address the needs of our members, as well as assisting them in developing partnerships with expert agencies and statutory authorities on the ground.“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the members of FIFA’s Child Safeguarding Expert Working Group, who are leading experts in this field, for their support and expertise in developing the new toolkit.“We are delighted that they have also agreed to advise us in the further development of the FIFA Guardians programme, so that we can ensure the continued delivery of the most current and best possible guidance, to address the needs of our members in safeguarding children across the game.”To read more about the FIFA Guardians™ programme and FIFA’s child safeguarding toolkit, please click HERE.

Daily Media Update for 7 July

Jul 7, 2019

And then there were two. #LaGrandeFinale promises to be a historic occasion with a number of intriguing, interweaving storylines. USA are back for their third consecutive final, with a number of players remaining from the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ squad. The 2015 title-winning coach Jill Ellis will no doubt be calling on the experience of four years ago to drive her fresh team forward.

Standing in the way of the ‘fourth star’ for the US are the Netherlands, who have reached their maiden Women’s World Cup final in only their second appearance at the global finals. Their meteoric rise has been fuelled by a golden generation, spearheaded by the attacking flair of Vivianne Miedema, Lieke Martens and Shanice van de Sanden.

Both sides’ outstanding attacking talents should make for a mouthwatering final, with the race for the adidas Golden Boot another interesting subplot. For the Stars and Stripes, Alex Morgan (6 goals) and Megan Rapinoe (5) are jostling for position at the top of the standings, while Miedema (3) is perhaps a bit too far back to catch the dynamic duo – or England’s Ellen White – atop the list of sharp shooters.

A record-extending fourth title for the US, or a maiden crown for the Dutch – who will be the history-makers on Sunday?

Stats of the Day
The USA and the Netherlands have met in eight previous encounters with six wins for USA, two for the Netherlands and no draws. The Dutch were victorious in the first two meetings in 1991 and 1996 but the Americans prevailed in the remaining six, most recently winning 3-1 in September 2016.

Current Oranje coach Sarina Wiegman played in four of those past duels between 1996 and 1999, collecting one win and three defeats.

This is the fifth Final in eight editions for USA, who are also the first side to contest three consecutive world title deciders. The Netherlands have reached the Final for the first time, in their second Women’s World Cup participation.
