AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Riders Gear Up for DAYTONA 200

Mar 11, 2014

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 10, 2014) – The DAYTONA 200 at Daytona International Speedway remains the cornerstone of Daytona’s historic Bike Week festivities and will once again feature the stars of AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike in a grueling 200-mile battle pitting man and machine as they take on the traditional 3.51-mile, 12-turn speedway road course. The 73rd running will provide another chance for one rider to claim victory and stamp their name in the record books alongside some of the biggest names in the history of the sport.

Combining elements of endurance racing, such as the fast-and-furious pit stops, with the all-out pace of sprint racing, the DAYTONA 200 is truly a unique event. This year’s 200-mile race will be an important one historically as it is set to end an era. After a decade of middleweight-class machines contesting America’s most famous motorcycle race, 2015 will see the return of AMA Pro SuperBike to the DAYTONA 200. The AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBikes have put on a great show on the High Banks, and the last race of the era will be a final chance for the class competitors to win the race on a middleweight machine.

With 2013 GoPro Daytona SportBike champion Cameron Beaubier graduating to SuperBike in 2014, the class seems more like a wide-open proposition this time around. The race at Daytona International Speedway is an excellent chance for class combatants to stamp their mark on the upcoming season.

One of the favorites to win this year’s DAYTONA 200 is Jake Gagne (No. 32 RoadRace Factory/Red Bull Yamaha YZF-R6). Gagne was the only rider to beat Beaubier last season — at Road America in a thrilling battle — and the Californian finished second in the final standings when the season came to a close at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Gagne returns to the RoadRace Factory/Red Bull team, and a win in Daytona would be a good way to begin his third season with the team.

Beaubier’s teammate last year, Garrett Gerloff (No. 8 Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6) finished strong in 2013 and showed great improvement in battling with Beaubier in the later rounds. Gerloff just missed a few wins last year in what was essentially his rookie season.

JD Beach (No. 6 Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6), another class contender, will join Gerloff in a formidable lineup for the factory-backed Yamaha squad. Beach also finished strong and was signed to replace the graduating Beaubier.

Dane Westby (No. 00 Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) decided to form his own team for 2014 and has put together an impressive program. Westby returns to Yamaha machinery after forays on Suzuki and Honda equipment. The former class number two in the points struggled some in 2013 but looks to return to the race-winning form he had the two previous years. In a class of young talent looking to blaze to the top and older veterans with the guile to get it done, Westby is a “tweener,” a rider with a lot of class experience but one with a sense of aggression.

Jake Zemke and Joe Roberts will race bikes prepped by Team Hammer in 2014. Class veteran Zemke (No. 98 GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing Honda CBR600RR) has experienced victory at Daytona before and has seen plenty of success while riding Hondas in the past. Roberts (No. 2 M4 GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing Honda CBR600RR) won all five races he contested in AMA Pro SuperSport last year. After experiencing success in Europe as well, all eyes are on Roberts to see how he progresses in 2014.

Jake Lewis (No. 85 Yamaha YZF-R6) is another young rider with the potential to win the DAYTONA 200. Lewis, from the road racing hotbed of Kentucky, earned nine top-fives in his rookie GoPro Daytona SportBike season. For his second year in the class, he will remain with the same Meen crew that he became familiar with in 2013.

Former two-time class champion Danny Eslick (No. 69 Riders Discount Racing Triumph Daytona 675R) returns to GoPro Daytona SportBike after a few seasons in AMA Pro SuperBike. Eslick has previously won the class crown on Buell and Suzuki machinery and, this time, will attempt the feat on a Triumph. Despite his success in the class, Eslick has seen his share of disappointment at Daytona and has never won the DAYTONA 200. He’ll no doubt be looking to change that this go-around.

This year’s field has its share of former DAYTONA 200 winners. In addition to Zemke, the 2006 race winner, Steve Rapp (No. 15 D&D Cycles/Castrol/Triumph Daytona 675R) will attempt to add another marker to complement his 2007 win. Rapp, the reigning AMA Pro Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series champ, has experienced a late-career renaissance, and the versatile veteran is one of the many highlights of the 42-bike field for this year’s DAYTONA 200.

Joey Pascarella (No. 52 BP Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) put on a dominating performance in 2012 to win his DAYTONA 200 in one of the biggest upsets ever. After time on other brands, Pascarella will once again race a Yamaha this season.

Jason DiSalvo (No. 40 Castrol/Triumph/Sportbike Track Time Triumph Daytona 675R) won the race in 2011 and made another charge for a second win in 2012 before coming up just short. DiSalvo is always strong on the 3.51-mile circuit.

DiSalvo’s teammate in 2014 is Elena Myers (No. 21 Castrol/Triumph/Apex Manufacturing Triumph Daytona 675R). Myers and Melissa Paris (No. 13 MPH Racing Honda CBR600RR) have battled for top-finishing female racer in the DAYTONA 200 in recent seasons.

The 73rd running of the DAYTONA 200 will begin Saturday, March 15 at 1:00 p.m. EST.

Even after a dominating performance, LA falls to RSL

Mar 9, 2014

Carson City, California- The StubHub! Center, March 8, 2014 (Photos: Samuel Coronado)

This season was going to be a season of redemption for the LA Galaxy. Last season was not a good season overall for the LA Galaxy. It was not a good season for them because they had set high standards for themselves and they weren’t able to reach them. They didn’t win the MLS Cup, the Supporters Shield, the CONCACAF Champions League, nor the US Open Cup. The highlights of last year’s season was signing both Landon Donovan and Omar Gonzalez for a long term deal, signing Jaime Penedo, and Donovan tying the regular season scoring record. This season, the standards were set just as high, but the Galaxy thought they were ready.

The season started at home against their hated rivals, Real Salt Lake. RSL not only won the Western League Conference Title, they were the team that eliminated the Galaxy from the playoffs. The season began in front of a sell-out crowd at the StubHub! Center. Even before he players walked onto the field, the atmosphere was electric. All three of the Galaxy’s supporters groups were ready to cheer for their team. A plethora of Real Salt Lake fans went to the game and were cheering loudly for the team. As the teams came onto the field, the fans erupted in jubilation excited for the start of this game, the start of a new season.

The Galaxy was ready for the start of the season. The Galaxy came out running on all cylinders, attacking from all angles and with different players. It didn’t look as if Donovan’s record breaking goal was going to be a distraction for the Galaxy because the midfielders were not giving Donovan unnecessary passes. Galaxy started their newly acquired forward, Samuel, and he was playing well. Marcelo Sarvas and Juninho were finding Samuel in open spaces and Samuel would make great passes to Robbie Keane. Galaxy kept attacking throughout the first half but Real Salt Lake’s goalkeeper, Nick Rimando, stood tall in his crease. He made a very important save half way through the first half. Keane found Donovan cutting into the box and passed him the ball. Donovan got there before the defender and he tried chipping it over a diving Rimando. Rimando stuck out his hand and saved the shot. Donovan knew he missed a perfect opportunity to break the record. Galaxy’s other scoring opportunities either hit the posts, missed the net by inches, or were blocked by Rimando. The only real opportunity that Real Salt Lake was able to muster was blocked by a diving Penedo.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first half. Galaxy was attacking from every direction but Rimando was coming up just as big. Just as Galaxy seemed to get ready to score and take the lead, Real Salt Lake scores a goal. The stadium was about to get quite but the referee started waving his arms waving off the goal. The crowd erupted and Galaxy put the ball in play before Real Salt Lake could protest. Real Salt Lake had a reason to protest because looking at the replay, there wasn’t any reason for the goal to be waived off. Four minutes later, it didn’t matter because Real Salt Lake scored the game winning goal. Kyle Beckerman had the ball and he saw Joao Plata running into the box. He gave him a through ball down the middle of the field. Alvaro Sabario put a pick on Omar Gonzalez and that allowed the ball to get to Plata. A.J. DelaGarza tried to reach Plata before he shot the ball but it was too late. Penedo was left alone and he couldn’t block the shot.

The game ended with a controversial play. In a desperation play, Gonzalez crossed the ball from the middle of the field to the opposing box, where Rob Friend jumped up to try to head the ball. He seemed to jump up awkwardly into the Real Salt Lake defenders. The referee pointed directly at the spot and even though all of Real Salt Lake was protesting. Keane set up the ball and did his signature kick. He ran up towards the ball, hesitated a little and shot low and to the left. Rimando waited till the last moment and dove correctly and made the game winning save. The game ended shortly after controversial play.

Preview: LA Galaxy 2014

Mar 7, 2014

March 7, 2014

The MLS season started with a bang for the LA Galaxy. They were beginning their season against their arch-rivals and 2013 Western League Champions Real Salt Lake. For the LA Galaxy, this was much more than just a game and it was much more than just the beginning of another season. They finished last season with so many questions that needed to be answered. One of their biggest questions was, “How long was it going to take Landon Donovan to break the regular season scoring record?” He finished the last season tied with Jeff Cunningham and people were asking if this was going to be a distraction for the Galaxy.

Another question that was going to be answered throughout the season was how well were the Galaxy reinforcements, Rob Friend (F), Baggio Husidic (M), Stefan Ishizaki (M), James Riley (D), Samuel (F), were going to mesh with the current squad. One of the Galaxy’s Achilles heel from last year was the lack of depth in their roster. The previous season, it seemed that no one was really able to come off the bench and have any real impact. The lack of depth was really shown when a starter would miss a start due to injury or suspension, Galaxy couldn’t really fill the hole. Depth seemed a priority for the Galaxy because they signed five free agents. The team needs these new reinforcements to have an impact because not only are the Galaxy in the CONCACAF Champions League but they will lose players during her World Cup this summer. Theses reinforcements need to make an impact immediately.

One final question was how well would Galaxy’s defense hold up this season. Last season, the Galaxy couldn’t defend set plays and they’d lose their defensive composure in the final 15 minutes of games. They let go of many points in the final 15 minutes of games. This year, they again got a defensive reinforcement and they were going to start the season with one of MLS’s best goalkeeper, Jaime Penedo. Last season, when he signed with the Galaxy after the Gold Cup, Galaxy’s defense improved. This season, he was going to try to do the same.

México 4 vs. 0 Corea: Internacional Amistoso.

Jan 30, 2014

San Antonio, TX.

It’s Official: Justin Allgaier to Drive No. 51 for Phoenix Racing

Jan 28, 2014

January 21, 2014 . Phoenix, Arizona.

Phoenix Racing announced today that Justin Allgaier will be the driver of the No. 51 BRANDT Chevrolet SS during the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Allgaier, who finished fifth in the 2013 NASCAR Nationwide Series championship points, will be a candidate for the NASCAR Rookie of the Year award.
“This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I intend to make the most of it,” said Allgaier. “I am very grateful to Harry Scott and BRANDT for having faith in me to compete against the best drivers in the world.”
“Justin has worked extremely hard to get to this level and he is ready to take the next step,” said team owner Harry Scott Jr. “Working with competition director and crew chief Steve Addington, I think the No. 51 can turn some heads this year.”
BRANDT will be the primary sponsor for the No. 51 for 21 races during the 2014 season. The agriculture retailer and manufacturer of agricultural specialty products has been active in NASCAR since 2011 and sponsored the No. 51 for four races in 2013.
“The entire BRANDT team is excited about moving to the next level,” explained Rick Brandt, company president and CEO. “We looked long and hard at this opportunity and ultimately we decided that we needed the broader footprint that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series affords us to drive our business forward. This is about taking our brand to the millions of fans who watch the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.”
Joining BRANDT on the car are The National FFA, TradeMark Nitrogen, Nutrients for Life Foundation, Precision Tank and Grigg Brothers. Together, these partners are supporting the only true ag-focused car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
“We are proud to help field the ‘Ag’ car,” said Brandt. “This is an effort to raise awareness and build a positive reputation for agriculture of all kinds. We believe passionately that agriculture is the essential industry and we’re doing our part to get that message out.”
“I could not be more proud to represent BRANDT, a leading company that’s headquartered about 13 miles from where I grew up, as we make the leap to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series,” said Allgaier.
Allgaier, 27, joins Bobby Labonte as teammates at Phoenix Racing. Labonte will drive the No. 52 for several races in 2014, including the season-opening Daytona 500. Labonte has won 21 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in his 22-year career and won the series championship in 2000.
