June 23: Miguel Berchelt, Martin Murray Headline Full Day of Championship Boxing on ESPN+

Berchelt to defend WBC super featherweight title in Mexico, while Murray headlines card from London
(JUNE 21, 2018) — ESPN+ will have a full day of boxing on Saturday, June 23, with a pair of broadcasts from two continents.

From the O2 Arena in London, Martin Murray will face off against Roberto Garcia in the main event for the WBC Silver middleweight title. Also appearing on the broadcast will be undefeated heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois (7-0, 7 KOs) against Tom Little for the vacant British title, unbeaten light heavyweight Anthony Yarde (15-0, 14 KOs) versus Dariusz Sek (27-3-3, 9 KOs) for the WBO Intercontinental light heavyweight title, and 140-pound contender Ohara Davies (17-1, 13 KOs) will challenge WBC International super lightweight champion Paul Kamanga (21-1, 12 KOs). The broadcast will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET, with the Murray-Garcia bout expected to air shortly after 5:30 p.m. ET.

Then, at 11 p.m. ET, from Poliforum Zamna in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt (33-1, 29 KOs) will make the third defense of his title against Jonathan Barros (41-5-1, 22 KOs).

Murray (36-4-1, 17 KOs,), a four-time world title challenger, is riding a three-bout winning streak. He lost a split decision to Arthur Abraham for the WBO super middleweight title in November 2015 and has had three previous cracks at middleweight world titles. He was held to a controversial draw against Felix Sturm for the WBA crown in 2011, lost a disputed unanimous decision to WBC champion Sergio Martinez in 2013, and was knocked out in the 11th round by unified champion Gennady Golovkin on Feb. 21, 2015 in Monte Carlo.

Berchelt will be making the third defense of his title against Barros, an Argentine who once held the WBA featherweight title. Berchelt won the title via 11th-round KO against Francisco Vargas on Jan. 28, 2017 in what was one of the year’s best fights. Less than six months later, he outboxed former world champion Takashi Miura en route to a unanimous decision. In his last bout, Feb. 10 in Cancun, Mexico, Berchelt stopped Maxwell Awuku in the third round. Barros will be hitting the road for a title shot once again. He came up short in his last bout, on July 15, 2017 in London, losing a unanimous decision to Lee Selby for the IBF featherweight crown.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (June 20, 2018) — The next chapter of Jose Ramirez’s career —  this one as a world champion —  will occur with a new voice in his corner. After a long and successful partnership with Freddie Roach, Ramirez (22-0, 16 KOs) hired Robert Garcia as his head trainer following his unanimous decision victory over Amir Imam on March 17 to win the vacant WBC super lightweight championship.

Ramirez, from Avenal, California, will make his first title defense on July 7 at the Save Mart Center in nearby Fresno against Danny O’Connor (30-3, 11 KOs).

Ramirez worked out for the media Wednesday at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy.

This is what Ramirez and Garcia had to say.

Jose Ramirez

On fighting in Fresno as a champion

“I believe the excitement of the people to see me return home as a world champion is going to be huge. Everybody in the Central Valley watched my fight March 17 at Madison Square Garden when I beat Amir Imam to become world champion. I think the excitement and the pride that they’re going to come into the Save Mart Center with is going to make the atmosphere so much better.”

“My goal was to fight in Fresno, to showcase my skills in front of my fans, family, and friends. Once that happened, I was able to headline a show in Fresno, and everything started to fall into place. I’m honored that we’re able to defend the title in Fresno, thanks to Top Rank and the team that worked hard to get this fight done. I’m living a dream.”

On being a big favorite against Danny O’Connor.

“I feel like I have a responsibility as a world champion, so that responsibility helps me stay focused and grounded. This fight will only lead to bigger fights. It’s another step to fighting the big fights.”

On the 140-pound division

“I want to fight all of the champions, but I have to take care of business July 7 against Danny O’Connor first. I am excited to come home and defend my title. It’s going to be a great night for the Central Valley of California.”

Robert Garcia

On working with Ramirez

“I’d met him before. In the amateurs, everyone knew about Jose. I saw him fight in Fresno, and he would come to my gym in Oxnard, spar a few rounds. I’ve known him for a long time, and it’s great to be working with him.”

Ramirez vs. O’Connor will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET. Undercard bouts, including appearances by Central Valley prospect Bryan Lua and heavyweight contender Andy Ruiz Jr., will stream on ESPN+ starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. Also appearing on ESPN+ in a six-round special attraction will be blue-chip prospect Gabe Flores Jr. of Stockton, California, who signed with Top Rank as a 16-year-old in November 2016, becoming the youngest fighter ever signed by the promotional company.

The Pan American Democratic of Queens & United Dominican Coalition Endorse Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Jun 21, 2018

On Friday, voters across New York saw us fiercely defend policies designed to help them, not big corporations. We didn’t just acknowledge the concerns of the people of New York — we offered real solutions on how to deal with them.

That’s what’s been missing from national politics. When working families say that they can’t afford skyrocketing costs of living, Democrats say we need to look at ways to deal with that. Our message is different, and without delay — raise the minimum wage to $15, and get dark money out of politics so big businesses can’t block common sense housing policies.

When hourly workers say that they can’t afford their premiums, national democrats say we need ‘affordable healthcare.’ Not sure what that means, but we had a better idea — Expanded and Improved Medicare for All. Stop letting the insurance companies exploit our neighbors, and take them out of the equation altogether.

When people can’t pay their bills today, their children attend broken school systems, and they see their neighborhoods changing around them, it’s not enough to promise to listen and talk about the issues. We need real policy solutions designed to fix these problems, and embolden the voiceless in our political system.

Last night, we saw something different. Like the Pan American Democratic debate, Crowley didn’t show — but this time, he decided to send a surrogate.

That didn’t stop us from giving a voice to the powerless, and fighting for policies that will help make their lives better. But while we were still able to reach voters and give them a fair chance at hearing our platform, that doesn’t change what a disservice it was for Crowley to ignore his constituents.

Crowley was campaigning just five subway stops away from where the debate was held — meaning he chose not to speak to voters tonight. How can our representative truly stand for the wishes of his voters when he won’t take an hour out of his day to speak in front of them?

This race isn’t just about us anymore, it’s about sending a simple message — not all Democrats are the same. I am proud to be the only Democrat in this race that rejects all corporate money and champions and advances improved and expanded Medicare for all, a federal jobs guarantee, tuition free public college and the abolition of ICE.

We see the cracks in the machine, and it’s time to end this rigged system once and for all.

BereaVision/Nueva York
Cesar Escamilla.

Boxing Champion Abner Mares Statement on the separation of parents and children at the U.S. Borders

Jun 20, 2018
Abner Mares Statement on the separation of parents and children at the U.S. borders
June 20, 2018

“I came to the United States from Mexico at age seven. I came here without the proper documents and didn’t speak English. Like so many women before her, my mother brought my brother, sister and myself here for a better life. Life wasn’t easy, and we watched her work three jobs. We all did what we could – I would dumpster dive for bottles and cans to help pay for food.

But it didn’t matter, because we were working towards our dreams – our American dreams.

Now, as an American resident who will become an American citizen in 2019, as a father, a son and a brother, it makes my heart break to see and hear of the forced separation of parents from their children at the borders. We all have dreams, we all have family…regardless of borders. What is happening at the borders of this country, of MY country, it is simply inhuman.

I’m an example of the American AND Mexican dreams combined, the North American dream.  I have a successful career in boxing, and a successful business in the United States and Mexico that employs both American and Mexican citizens. I am lucky enough to have a loving family that is happy, healthy and together.

As a father and human being I can’t stay silent, and I cannot condone what is going on…putting children of any age in a prison camp is not what we as caring humans do.

The founders of this country said that we are all ‘one people, under God, indivisible’ and that there is indeed, justice for all. The symbol of our country, the Statue of Liberty, herself, says to bring us your poor, your huddled masses…are we to remove that saying, ignore that line, that sentiment?

This isn’t unity, this isn’t diversity, this is division. This is going against what God asks of us as humans. The trauma these children and adults face will haunt them for their lifetime.

I join the world and condemn the unjust imprisonment of children and ask all my fans, followers and supporters to call their elected officials – Congressmen and Congresswomen, Senators, House Representatives, Councilmen, Mayors and Governors.

Your voice MUST be heard.

It’s simple. Go to facebook.com/townhall and all your representatives and their phone numbers appear. Or go to https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative to find your representative.

Email them, call them, and tell them that all it takes is one sentence of legislation, one phone call from the President to stop this.

“All families seeking asylum or crossing the border of the United States, either documented or not, shall not be separated from their minor children.”

It is not illegal to seek asylum at the border of any country. These people are not criminals. They are seeking asylum, a better life. It is not their fault the immigration system of the United States is broken and Congress has been unable to agree on a humane solution. They are innocent. They are children.

We can stop this.

It takes one sentence to put an end to this.

One sentence. It doesn’t take debate, pages of documents, weeks. One sentence, one vote, one call.

I urge lawmakers on all sides of the aisle to put people first and politics second.

Call your legislatures. Email your representatives. Demand a vote to end family separations today

Signal Hill, Calif. (June 19, 2018) — Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez and Alex “El Cholo” Saucedo showcased their skills for the media Tuesday at Hill Street Boxing Gym as they finalize preparations for their respective nationally televised bouts, June 30 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.

In the main event, Ramirez (37-0, 25 KOs) will defend the WBO super middleweight title against unbeaten Colombian challenger Alexis Angulo (23-0, 20 KOs), while Oklahoma City native Saucedo (27-0, 17 KOs) will face Australian puncher Lenny Zappavigna (37-3, 27 KOs) for the WBO International super lightweight title.

Ramirez-Angulo and Saucedo-Zappavigna will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes at 9 p.m. ET. Undercard action, including appearances by 2016 Olympic gold medalist Robson Conceicao, female fighting sensation Mikaela Mayer, and heavyweight knockout artist Trey Lippe Morrison, will be broadcast on ESPN+ beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

Promoted by Top Rank, tickets to this world championship extravaganza are ON SALE NOW. Priced at $200, $100, $60, $40 and $25, not including facility and service fees, tickets may be purchased at the Chesapeake Energy Arena box office, online at Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets or by phone at 1-800-745-3000.

This is what the fighters had to say.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez

On Alexis Angulo

“We’ve seen a couple of tapes. He’s a big puncher. He has a good record, and I have been preparing very hard for him. I’ve been doing a lot of sparring with different guys, and I’m ready to put on a great performance for Oklahoma City and the people watching on ESPN.”

“He’a dangerous fighter because we don’t know what he brings. Like I said, I prepared really well for this fight. We don’t know what kind of strategy he brings to the ring, so we’re preparing with different styles.”

On the super middleweight division

“I am looking for unification fights. That’s what I want. But first things first. We have a tough fight with Angulo, and after that, we are looking at any of those fighters. Let’s do it. Let’s make it happen.”

On being active after a long layoff

“For me, being more active is helpful. I like fighting three or four times a year. It makes me feel good and motivated. If you don’t fight enough, it hurts you in the ring.”

Alex “El Cholo” Saucedo

On Lenny Zappavigna

“Lenny is an aggressive fighter and I am as well. We both have great knockout percentages, so it’s going to be a great fight for Oklahoma City. I’m ready.”

On Oklahoma City

“I want to give all my people back home a great event. We have ESPN and Top Rank coming through. It’s going to be a special night for the city, and I am proud to represent my people. I want everyone to come out and support this event. If everything goes well, we’ll be back with bigger things.”

“I wanted to bring a tough fight to the city, so they could see that we’re ready to move on to bigger things. It’s going to be a tough fight, but I believe I’m ready to put him out of there as well.”

“I was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. I came to Oklahoma City when I was 7 years old. I started third grade in Oklahoma City, and I’ve been there ever since. Everyone watched me as an amateur fighter, as a professional fighter. Now they have the opportunity to see me fight on ESPN, at the Chesapeake Energy Arena, on one of the biggest boxing events in Oklahoma. I’m really motivated about and excited to give everyone a show.”

On a future title shot

“There are two guys with belts, Jose Ramirez and Maurice Hooker, who I’d love to fight. But right now, I need to worry about June 30.”

On his preparation

“I felt great in sparring. I feel like my trainer {Abel Sanchez} and I worked on everything we wanted to.”
