NEW ORLEANS. (June 1, 2018) — Regis Prograis returned home Wednesday for a homecoming press conference at The Original French Market Restaurant & Bar to promote his WBC super lightweight diamond belt title defense against fellow unbeaten Juan Jose Velasco, July 14 at the Lakefront Arena on the campus of the University of New Orleans.Prograis (21-0, 18 KOs) was born in New Orleans, moving to Houston after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Now, he’s back for the first time as a professional and ready to put on a show for his home fans against Velasco (20-0, 12 KOs), a Buenos Aires, Argentina, native who has won four of his last five bouts via knockout.

It was a star-studded afternoon featuring New Orleans dignitaries, including the city’s mayor, LaToya Cantrell.

This is what Prograis and his promoter, Lou Dibella, had to say.

Prograis

“Boxing is not as big in New Orleans because the kids don’t see it. I want to be the person that they see, that they know they have a champion in New Orleans. Boxing is big right now in New York and Las Vegas, but I’m telling you that I’m going to change it. It’s going to boost the economy and everybody in the world will come back to New Orleans. Ali fought here, Duran fought here, Sugar Ray Leonard fought here and I’m going to bring it back. I’d like to thank everybody for coming. One of the main things you can do if you want to bring big time boxing back to New Orleans is come to the fight on July 14. That’s all you have to do, come to the fight.”

“Every time I think of New Orleans, I think of its culture and the people. There is a such a strong culture in New Orleans and our fans are so loyal. The Saints can lose every game,  and we’re still going to be in the Superdome every weekend. I just want to inspire the kids.”

DiBella

“Since I signed Regis, he’s wanted to fight here. This was the right moment. Regis wants to be a great champion. Regis wants to be a unified champion. Regis wants to be a Hall of Fame fighter. He wants all those things. He also wants to be a leader in New Orleans, he really does. He wants to influence kids in New Orleans. He wants to be influential.”

“I have so much respect for Regis, not only as an athlete but as a person. He’s all about this city.”

“We’re very grateful to have this tremendous support from the city of New Orleans for this
event and honored to have Mayor LaToya Cantrell join us today.”

The Best FIFA Football Awards™ and stars of the game to return to London in 2018

The Best FIFA Football Awards – a star-studded night celebrating football’s greatest – will return to London on 24 September 2018. Legends of the game from across the world will gather later this year in the iconic city for the third edition of the prestigious event.

The awards return to London for the second year in a row following last year’s glittering event, in which Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo picked up The Best Men’s Player, the Netherlands’ Lieke Martens was crowned The Best Women’s Player, French icon Zinédine Zidane was named The Best Coach and the Netherlands’ Sarina Wiegman was awarded the trophy for The Best FIFA Women’s Coach.

In a FIFA World Cup™ year, the awards will take on added significance in 2018, as football’s greatest players and coaches from all six continents strive to be crowned The Best.

“As a passionate football city in a nation with a strong footballing heritage, London will once again prove to be an excellent destination to host The Best FIFA Football Awards, and we are excited to return after the success of last year’s second edition. With the 2018 FIFA World Cup showcasing football’s finest across Russia this summer, there is everything to play for, making this year’s awards a truly exceptional occasion,” said FIFA Deputy Secretary General (Football) Zvonimir Boban.

A total of nine trophies will be presented at the awards ceremony:

•  The FIFA Puskás Award 2018

•  The FIFA Fair Play Award 2018

•  The FIFA Fan Award 2018

Once again, the fans at the heart of the game will play an active role in deciding the men’s and women’s players and coaches of the year. Winners will be chosen by a process involving stakeholders from across the world of football, including players, coaches, fans and media.

•  25% of the result will be based on the choices of the captains of all of the world’s national teams.

•  25% of the result will be based on the choices of the head coaches of all of the world’s national teams.

•  25% of the result will be based on a public ballot of football fans on FIFA.com.

•  25% of the result will be based on submissions from a selected group of more than 200 media representatives from around the world.

Ten candidates will be shortlisted for the following four awards and will be unveiled on 23 July 2018, with voting opening on the same day.

Lomachenko Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Eyeing 2018 Return

Under the Knife: Lomachenko Shoulder Surgery Successful

The WBA and Ring Magazine lightweight champion is eyeing a 2018 return

LOS ANGELES (May 30, 2018) – Vasiliy Lomachenko underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder suffered during the second round of his May 12 bout against Jorge Linares. The surgery, performed by world-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache, will preclude Lomachenko from fighting Aug. 25 as originally scheduled. Lomachenko will begin the recovery process immediately and is hopeful that he will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) and Ring Magazine lightweight titles before the end of the year.

Said Dr. ElAttrache: “Vasiliy had the anticipated injuries in his right shoulder, resulting from a dislocation event that he sustained during his fight on May 12. In particular, he had an extensive labral tear, approximately 270 degrees with a small amount of cartilage damage and a bone impaction injury, all resulting in instability of the shoulder. He underwent an arthroscopic repair of the labrum as anticipated with no complications. Based on the result of the surgical repair, we are optimistic for an excellent prognosis and for him to return to competition at his previous level of performance.”
