XOLOITZCUINTLES EARN WIN ON THE ROAD IN SEASON OPENER
Puebla FC 1-3 Club Tijuana, LIGA MX 2019 Apertura Week 1

PUEBLA, Mexico (July 19, 2019) –Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles opened the LIGA MX 2019 Apertura with a 3-1 win against host Puebla FC Friday night at Estadio Cuauhtemoc.

The Xoloitzcuintles overcame an early 1-0 deficit with goals by newcomer Washington Camacho, Ariel Nahuelpan and offseason acquisition Angel Sepulveda.

Coach Oscar Pareja’s team earns three points with the Week 1 road win against La Franja, a team that took an early lead.

Puebla took the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Christian Tabo took a Lucas Cavallini low rolling pass from left to right. Tabo was wide open with only the goalkeeper to beat. Tabo charged the penalty box and Club Tijuana goalkeeper Gibran Lajud coming on to defend but the Puebla striker shook him off with a move to the right then fired his shot into the empty net.

But the Xoloitzcuintles answered with three goals.

Club Tijuana tied the match when Camacho put back an Ariel Nahuelpan blocked shot. The Uruguayan sent in his shot to tie the game 1-1 after Puebla goalkeeper Nicolas Vikonis blocked the shot. Miller Bolaños had fed Nahuelpan with a through ball to set up the scoring play.

Bolaños had a foot in the second Club Tijuana score.

Nahuelpan headed in a cross by Bolaños from left to right. The Argentine forward out jumped his mark and got his bald head on the ball, bouncing it in front of Vikonis, the goalkeeper, and past him into the net. Bolaños sped up field and maneuvered the ball before sending his cross between a pair of defenders.

Sepulveda scored his first goal with Club Tijuana moments after coming on as a substitute. The forward headed in a bouncing ball from a goal kick by Lajud. The ball bounced near Nahuelpan, who blocked his mark, creating a screen while allowing the ball to bounce past him. That’s where Sepulveda ran to the ball and got his head on it before Vilkonis reached it.

The Xoloitzcuintles will take the three points back to Tijuana and begin preparing for its next match. Pareja’s team next will travel to Carson, Calif. to face Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals Tuesday July 23 at Dignity Health Sports Park.
