CLUB TIJUANA TIES AT HOME IN WEEK 12
Xoloitzcuintles 1-1 Queretaro, LIGA MX 2018 Apertura
TIJUANA (Oct. 6, 2018) –Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles played to a 1-1 tie against visiting Queretaro FC Saturday night at Estadio Caliente.
Fabian Castillo (13th minute) scored for Coach Diego Cocca’s team the 1-0 lead with a diving header. The Colombian was in stride as he dove for a pin-point cross by Miller Bolaños. Castillo caught the ball straight on and sent it past Queretaro goalkeeper Tiago Volpi from just outside the six-yard box.
It was Castillo’s first goal with Club Tijuana. The speedy striker came to the Xoloitzcuintles this past offseason.
Camilo Da Silva tied the match when he converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Club Tijuana’s Gustvo Canto was whistled for a handball in the penalty box. But the Xoloitzcuintles defender argued he had kept his arms to his body as he turned his back towards a shot. The ball hit Canto. The Argentine defender pointed to a spot on the side of his back where he said the ball hit. The penalty call stood.
The Xoloitzcuintles continued to play its scheme despite the penalty call. It controlled possession. It pushed the opponent to its side of the field as it moved its lines up. It fired at will but the goalkeeper made constant saves. Castillo nearly scored again in the second half but Volpi made another diving save at his line. Volpi also slapped away a Diego Gonzales header at his line.
Tijuana enters another FIFA international break but will host an exhibition match against Dorados de Sinaloa coached by Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona. The friendly is set for Friday Oct. 12. The Xolos resume Liga MX play Oct. 20 when it visits Club America in Mexico City.
