Statement On June 29th Police-Involved Shooting in Southeast Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD. (Friday, June 30, 2023) – Today, Mayor Brandon M. Scott, alongside the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, released the following joint statement on Thursday’s police-involved shooting in the Southeastern District.

«Last night, BPD Officers were involved in a shooting after they observed and tried to engage an individual who was wanted on a warrant. The individual shot at the officers multiple times, the officers returned fire and killed the suspect. At this point in time, we do not believe that any officers or bystanders were harmed. This violent, tragic outcome impacts the entire Baltimore community, and our hearts are with all of those affected by this incident in every way. In line with our commitment transparency and accountability, as the investigation progresses, we will continue to keep residents informed of any additional pertinent information when it becomes available.

“In following protocols outlined within the consent decree, we’ve engaged the Department of Justice and the various community oversight partners. This incident is a reminder that the men and women of the BPD continue to face danger every day in their effort to serve Baltimore and improve public safety. I commend them on upholding the standards of professionalism and diligence we have worked to build within the department. As in every instance, there will be an assessment of the actions taken – but all initial information indicates the officers did what was necessary to ensure this violent incident did not further endanger residents in the area.
