| HOUSTON, TX – Houston Public Library (HPL) invites the community to take part in a month of learning and culture this February. Programming throughout the city will celebrate Black History Month, Library Lover’s Month, and Lunar Year, offering meaningful ways to Houstonians of all ages to engage with history, creativity, and one another.
Guided by this year’s Black History Month theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” HPL will host a robust lineup of lectures, author talks, performances, and family-friendly experiences honoring the legacy, resilience, and contributions of Black communities.
Anchoring the month is “100 Years of Black History Commemoration: Legacy, Resilience, and Celebration,” a multi-location lecture series featuring community leaders, scholars, and artists including Pastor D.Z. Cofield, Houston Ballet’s Harper Watters, Houston City Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, and Rice University’s Dr. Alexander Byrd.

Additional Black History highlights include citywide read-in events, author and comic talks, culinary and cultural programs, community celebrations honoring Black trail riders, and interactive experiences for families at libraries across Houston.
February also marks Library Lover’s Month, and HPL is inviting patrons to share why they love their library by leaving Google reviews and participating on social media. Community members are encouraged to celebrate the vital role libraries play by joining the conversation online throughout the month.
HPL will also celebrate Lunar New Year with a special event on February 7, featuring Monique Truong sharing the unique traditions of her family.
All programs are free and open to the public. Events will be held in person and virtually at neighborhood and regional libraries.
