Houston police have arrested a suspect charged in the fatal shooting of a woman and the wounding of a man at 8150 Southwest Freeway (South Interstate Highway 59) about 2:50 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 13).
John Eneal Leathers Jr., 32, is charged with murder in the 176th Criminal District Court. A booking photo of Leathers is attached to this news release.
The identity of the deceased female, 43, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant S. Jimenez and Detective C. Bowling reported:
Officers responded to a report of a shooting at 8704 South Gessner Drive and located a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the female deceased at the scene. The male was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.
Further investigation determined the shooting took place in a parking lot at 8150 Southwest Freeway. According to witnesses, there was an altercation between the victims and another group. The victims attempted to leave the location when an unknown male began shooting at their vehicle, striking the two individuals.
Further investigation identified the shooting suspect as Leathers and, on Tuesday (October 14), he turned himself into HPD without incident. Leathers was then booked into the Harris County Jail.
