| Charges have been filed against a second suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a male at 4603 Sherwood Lane about 10:50 p.m. on July 5, 2025.
The suspect, Jose Cortez-Torres, 39, is charged with murder in the 209th Criminal District Court.
Another suspect, Octavio Garcia Cruz, 48, is charged with murder in the 184th Criminal District Court. Booking photos of Cortez-Torres and Cruz are attached to this news release.
The victim is identified as Angel Chavira, 35.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan reported:
HPD officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex at the above address and found the victim had been transported to the hospital via a private vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Further investigation revealed the male was sitting outside his apartment with friends when he was approached by two Hispanic male suspects. One of the suspects shot the victim multiple times and both suspects then fled on foot in an unknown direction.
One suspect was later identified as Cruz. On October 8, 2025, officers with HPD’s Gang Division’s Crime Reduction Unit and the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force arrested Cruz. He was subsequently charged and booked into the Harris County jail.
On January 2, 2026, members of HPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Detail arrested Cortez-Torres. He was subsequently charged and booked into the Harris County jail.
