Suspect Arrested and Charged in Connection to House Fire on Botany Lane
A man has been arrested after two Houston firefighters were burned while battling a house fire early Thursday morning at 4114 Botany Lane in Houston’s Sunnyside community.

The Houston Fire Department responded to the residential fire at 12:15 a.m. and began firefighting efforts. The fire was brought under control and tapped out at 12:37 a.m. Two HFD firefighters, a captain and a probationary firefighter, sustained thermal injuries while fighting the fire and were transported to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center. The probationary firefighter has been discharged while the captain remains hospitalized.

HFD Arson is investigating where and how the fire was started. Derrick Cox was arrested at the location, charged with felony Arson. Investigators believe he kicked down the front door of his grandmother’s home, where he set fire in a bedroom while the woman sought refuge at a neighbor’s house.

The HFD Arson Division is continuing the investigation.
