Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 5330 North Braeswood Boulevard

 

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a juvenile male that occurred at 5330 North Braeswood Boulevard about 7:15 p.m. on September 19.

The suspect, Braelin James, 17, is charged with murder in the 337th Criminal District Court. A booking photo of James is attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Kenneth Payne, 15.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives G. Rangel and H. Montealegre reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting victim at a hospital at 7600 Beechnut Street about 7:50 p.m. Witnesses stated the victim was involved in a disturbance at a gas station at 5330 North Braeswood Boulevard. Officers learned two groups were involved in a physical altercation at the gas station. As they were leaving, a suspect(s) fired shots towards their vehicle, striking the victim. The victim was transported to the hospital where doctors pronounced him deceased.

The victim was later identified as Mr. Payne.

Further investigation identified Braelin James as the suspect in this incident. HPD officers with the Southwest Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team arrested him on unrelated charges on Wednesday (Oct.1) and he was subsequently charged for his role in the fatal shooting.  .
