Hire Houston Youth Summer Interns reflect on their experience in a special episode of the H-Town Horseshoe Podcast titled, #InternTakeOver

HOUSTON – The City of Houston is thrilled to announce a special episode of the H-Town Horseshoe podcast titled “#InternTakeOver,” showcasing the inspiring stories of the 2023 Hire Houston Youth Summer Interns and their transformative experiences.

Mayor Sylvester Turner launched Hire Houston Youth in 2016 through the Mayor’s Office of Education to facilitate connecting youth to local jobs. This summer, nearly 20,000 young people, ages 16-24, are taking part in the “earn and learn” program gaining valuable hands-on experience in the public and private sector and with non-profit organizations. The program not only enriches their skills and knowledge required in the workforce, but also fosters a sense of civic responsibility and community engagement.

In this special episode of the H-Town Horseshoe, the spotlight is on several Hire Houston Youth interns as they shape the narrative and conversation. They candidly share their experiences, insights, and the impact the program has had on their personal and professional growth.

Austin Gray, an intern with the Mayor’s Office of Communications, serves as the episode’s host. He is a rising freshman at Adelphi University in New York majoring in Communications. Gray is excited about his experience obtained at City Hall this summer.

“I had a lot of fun doing this and getting to know the other interns in the Hire Houston Youth program and learning what they do,” said Gray.

HTV intern, Pilar Saravia is also featured on the episode. She is a rising sophomore at the University of Texas at Austin and majoring in Journalism. Pilar shares the sentiment of enthusiasm about her internship, “I was super honored to be on the podcast because I know the H-Town Horseshoe’s mission is to spread and translate information to the public. I am excited to talk about my internship experience on a platform like this. I thought it was cool that even the host was an intern because it gave all of us an opportunity to apply all the knowledge we’ve learned in these past few weeks.”

The episode also spotlights HTV intern, Karla Castillo and Ivan Ting from the Mayor’s Office of Education and Christian Wooten who is interning with the Hertz Corporation.
