Houston Public Library to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Beulah Shepard–Acres Homes Neighborhood Library
HOUSTON – Houston Public Library (HPL) is inviting the community to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beulah Shepard–Acres Homes Neighborhood Library on Saturday, November 14, 2026.

Built in 1976, the library emerged through the determined advocacy of Beulah Shepard, whose leadership helped secure long needed public services in Acres Homes. Shepard often said, “May the work I’ve done, speak for me.” Five decades later, the library that bears her name continues to speak powerfully to her legacy of access, equity, and community uplift.

“Reaching 50 years is a tremendous milestone for the Beulah Shepard–Acres Homes Neighborhood Library,” said Sandy Gaw, Library Director of the Houston Public Library. “This branch has always been more than a library. It is a place where knowledge, opportunity, and community meet. We are proud to honor Mrs. Shepard’s legacy as we continue offering resources that reflect the strength and spirit of Acres Homes.”

The anniversary celebration will feature community speakers, family activities, and local history displays. Guests can also enjoy programs inspired by the branch’s vibrant culture, including story times, creative activities for all ages, and information about upcoming HPL events and services.

A cultural cornerstone of one of Houston’s most historic neighborhoods, the library remains a vital hub for learning, digital access, and community connection.
