Suspect Arrested, Charged in Infant’s Death at 13114 South Post Oak Road

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the death of an infant found at 13114 South Post Oak Road about 4:25 a.m. on April 2.

The suspect, Diana Guadalupe Zavala Lopez, 25, is charged with tampering with evidence – human corpse in the 183rd State District Court. A Cameron County, TX booking photo of Zavala Lopez is attached to this news release.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Wilson and Detectives G. Zavala, J. Jorsch and C. Bowling reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a request for assistance from Houston Fire Department paramedics regarding a deceased infant found at a gas station at the above address.

Further investigation and evidence from the scene indicated an unknown Hispanic female entered the gas station bathroom and left about 15 minutes later.  Hours later, a customer went to use the restroom, found an infant in the bathroom and called 9-1-1.

HFD paramedics responded and attempted to provide medical assistance.  However, it was determined the infant had been deceased for hours prior to being found.

Tips from the public helped investigators identify the female as Zavala Lopez. Members of HPD’s South Gessner Crime Suppression Team learned she was attempting to flee the country, and on Tuesday (Aug. 1), agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained her in Brownsville, TX.

After HPD detectives interviewed Zavala Lopez and consulted the Harris County District Attorneys Office, she was subsequently charged for her role in this incident. She is awaiting extradition to Harris County.

The investigation is continuing.
