| HOUSTON – Hundreds of people got a special sneak peek at one of the city’s newest libraries under construction. The Dr. Shannon Walker Neighborhood Library, a beacon of learning and inclusivity, is poised to become a hub for discovery and connection within a vibrant community.
On Saturday, December 16, 2023, Mayor Sylvester Turner, District K Council Member and Vice Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, Johnson Space Center Director Vanessa Wyche, and Houston Public Library Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson toured the library along with more than 400 community members who were excited to see the facility.
City officials broke ground on the Dr. Shannon Walker Neighborhood Library in November 2022, beginning a new chapter in the City’s commitment to fostering literacy, culture, and community engagement. This library is named after the esteemed NASA astronaut Dr. Shannon Walker, a native Houstonian with deep roots in the community of District K. Located at 5505 Belrose Dr., it occupies 2.5 acres and will serve Houston’s Westbury, Meyerland, Brays Oaks and Hiram Clarke communities. The community can look forward to enjoying all the amenities inside of the library when it officially opens next spring.
The preview party featured an exclusive glimpse into the library’s innovative design, state-of-the-art facilities, and an array of resources tailored to meet the diverse needs of the community. The next-generation design offers a warm atmosphere to enjoy the world of reading and technology. “Residents finally got a sneak peek at what they’ve eagerly awaited for years. The library will be an awesome community resource. We look forward to the grand opening,” said Castex-Tatum.
Designed by Brave Architecture, the new library consists of a modern children’s, teen, and adult area, a multi-use meeting room, conference room, computers, and a full collection of books for all ages, materials and devices for checkout. The space also has a TECHLink technology center. Services include music, video and podcast studios, multimedia-focused PCs and tools, 3D printer access and interactive devices for kids. «After years of collaborating with the City, we’ve crafted not just a library, but a dynamic space of knowledge and creativity.
