Completed Private Property Mural Celebrated During Ribbon Cutting

Mural Ribbon CuttingLeesburg, VA (December 5, 2022) – On Saturday, December 3, the Town of Leesburg celebrated the completion of the Town’s first private property mural, located on the side of Maverick Bicycles, 32c Catoctin Circle SE, in the Virginia Village Shopping Center.

In August 2022, the Leesburg Town Council approved mural art submitted by local artist Serina Chowdhury. The mural depicts music notes and musicians performing in the historic downtown per requirements in a recent “Call to Artists”.

“I have always wished for the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the art culture within Leesburg. It is such a humbling and gratifying feeling to have that wish come true by having my first outdoor public mural be supported by my own hometown,” Chowdhury said. “I’m grateful to be involved in a way that allows me to support myself through doing what I love the most.

“A mural of this size comes with many unpredictable challenges and as an artist I take pleasure in being able to tackle all of these obstacles in a unique way that allows me to grow my skill set and create a wonderful work of art. I learned so many important lessons through the process that I will take with me. Also, I loved how creative I could be with a canvas this large”

In July 2021, the Leesburg Town Council approved the creation of a pilot program to allow murals to voluntarily be created on certain private commercial properties, subject to certain terms and conditions. An ad-hoc committee, made up of business owners, relevant commission members, and Town staff, was formed to assess the program and make a final report with recommendations to the council regarding the impacts, costs, and benefits of the pilot program on the community. In January 2022, a presentation was made to Council and the program was approved and officially launched on March 8, 2022. An update will be provided to the Town Council on Monday, December 12 regarding the pilot program.
